A Tough, Experienced Attorney Serving New Jersey, New York And Pennsylvania

I am criminal defense attorney Joseph M. Horn, Esq. My years of experience as a New Jersey police officer give me an unusually broad understanding of criminal law and the way the criminal justice system works.

When I was a police officer I learned that sometimes bad situations, such as a job loss or substance abuse, can cause people to make mistakes or bad choices. Investigating complaints and apprehending suspects showed me that people need an advocate who will tell their side of the story and explain their rights.

Believe me, without a lawyer on your side, you can get lost in the system.

As a defense lawyer, I help clients figure out how best to move forward after being charged with crimes. You may want to negotiate a plea; you may want to fight to the end. If a plea is your best option, I'll negotiate with the prosecutor, present any mitigating factors and fight hard for the result with the lowest possible penalty. I will explain your side of the story and the circumstances of the case. When a trial is in your best interests, I'll take the case to court and fight aggressively.

Whatever path you choose, I'll walk you through it one step at a time so you can get back to your life. I'll explain every stage of the criminal defense process — whether in municipal, state, federal or juvenile courts — so you aren't left in the dark. I'll always keep you informed of any events in your case. There shouldn't be any mystery once we start working together.

I'm a certified instructor by the Police Training Commission in New Jersey and have been a criminal law guest lecturer at Rutgers School of Law, William Paterson University, Ramapo College and Bergen Community College.

My civic activity includes working closely with several not-for-profit organizations and businesses that financially support them. In addition, I'm a member of several legal organizations in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

When I retired from police work, I was awarded the prestigious Mayor's Diamond Club Award and the Key to the City for the Township of Mahwah for my years of dedicated service to the community.
